Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues. Serves as a resource to physicians, staff, and other genetic counselors regarding genetic issues.
Job Description: Essential Responsibilities: - Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues which typically involves genetic or other testing. Interviews and evaluates patients' medical and genetic information. Recommends and coordinates additional testing and referrals.
- Provides extensive patient contact; explains procedures and risks, aids with decision-making, and provides psychosocial counseling as needed and follow-up.
- Maintains appropriate records including patient information, progress notes and charts, statistics, and encounter forms. Provides summary letters and other necessary documentation to referring providers and patients.
- Serves as resource to patients, providers, residents, and others regarding genetic counseling issues.
Works directly and meets regularly with administrative management and Medical Director regarding the genetics counseling program. - Maintains current knowledge regarding trends and developments in the field of genetics from multiple professional sources. Attends genetics conferences and presentations.
Required Qualifications: - Master's degree in Genetic Counseling in progress and degree completed prior to start date required.
- 0-1 years related work experience required.
- Provisional Genetic Counselor License required prior to start date.
- Full Genetic Counselor License required with 6 months of employment.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

- Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
- Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
- Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
- Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
- Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
