About the Department:
The Department's primary focus is helping students develop good logical and critical reasoning skills to be able to participate in independent thought and open debate, and to learn valuable insights that can be applied to contemporary life. The Department focuses on a methodological grounding in core Analytic Philosophy, applied to a broad range of philosophical questions, issues, perspectives, and arguments found both within and outside of Western Philosophy's mainstream traditional approach.

Our department focuses on developing advanced critical thinking skills and fostering a lasting commitment to teaching Philosophy with an awareness and acknowledgment of contemporary scientific theories, research, and evidence.

We are building a team of professionals who share enthusiasm for developing students as evidence-guided, truth-seeking, rational agents who are committed to the open debate and public discourse required to enact positive change and progress in society. We value experience and a desire to continue engaging with research focused on the philosophical theories and perspectives traditionally excluded by the tradition, including but not limited to those excluded on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, culture, or religion.

We value teaching methods that maximize student success and work experience in academic and non-academic positions that involve a significant element of philosophical research or practice (e.g. as a clinical ethicist, philosophical counsellor, existential coach, etc.). Our faculty continually reevaluate how learning is facilitated and assessed to ensure a fresh, culturally relevant, and equitable curriculum. We seek sound educational research to guide and ultimately validate the success of our instructional practices.

We value interdisciplinary knowledge and skills and a commitment to the personal work and professional development required to develop as an instructor, scholar, department colleague, and college member with a focus on equity and social justice. Our courses include activities that reinforce skills such as critical reading and writing, information literacy, and metacognitive development.
