JOB SUMMARY

The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for electrical construction projects. This role requires analyzing project specifications, drawings, and other relevant documents to determine the required labor, materials, and equipment. The Estimator collaborates with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to develop reliable bids that support client decision-making, ensure competitiveness, and enable successful project execution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cost Estimation: Review project documents to develop accurate cost estimates by quantifying labor, materials, and equipment.

  • Analysis of Project Documents: Evaluate electrical drawings, layouts, and technical specifications to ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards.

  • Material & Labor Takeoffs: Perform detailed takeoffs, estimate labor hours, and collaborate with suppliers/subcontractors to secure accurate pricing.

  • Cost Database Maintenance: Maintain an updated cost database for materials, labor, and equipment, ensuring estimates align with actual project costs.

  • Pricing & Bidding: Prepare cost breakdowns and proposals, present estimates to clients, and participate in bid meetings as required.

  • Value Engineering: Recommend cost-effective alternatives in materials, design, or construction methods without compromising safety or quality.

  • Risk Assessment: Identify risks such as market conditions, availability, and productivity factors, and propose mitigation strategies.

  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain thorough records of estimating activities, assumptions, and cost data. Generate reports and summaries for internal and client review.

  • Collaboration & Coordination: Partner with project managers, engineers, and suppliers to align estimates with project goals and obtain competitive pricing.

  • Continuous Learning: Stay current with industry trends, codes, and estimating technology. Participate in professional development and certifications.

  • Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 15 years of progressive field leadership or estimating experience in large commercial electrical contracting within Educational, Municipal, and/or Healthcare industry markets.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred; a combination of education and relevant field experience will be considered.

  • Strong knowledge of local and national electrical codes.

  • Ability to interpret architectural, structural, civil, and mechanical plans and specifications.

  • Knowledge of electrical materials, systems, and methods of installation.

  • Bluebeam proficiency required.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and estimating software.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent field leadership and estimating experience will be considered.

  • Advanced degree(s) in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field strongly preferred.

  • Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator) desirable.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to work extended hours and weekends as needed to meet project deadlines.

  • Regular attendance is an essential function.

  • Occasional travel to project sites may be required.

PHYSICAL OR MENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods (8+ hours).

  • Ability to transition between office and jobsite environments as needed.

  • Occasional exposure to dust, noise, and construction conditions when visiting project sites.
